The totally boring things I couldn’t be more excited about in our new place

It’s official, I’m middle aged. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with that, I’ve never been happier and I’m super stoked about what I’m doing and creating in my life these days. But I will say that the things that I get excited about now are very different than what I got excited about in my twenties, lol.

When we first moved in to our new place, I literally laid down to ‘hug’ our brand new beautiful hardwood floors in excitement, and I couldn’t help but laugh at myself. I was SO excited. About floors. But let me tell you, they are gorgeous… and perfect… and new… and I love them so much.

And the more I thought about it, the more I realized, I’m pretty excited about a lot of things that most people would find pretty boring. Like what you ask? Let me tell you all about every {boring} thing I absolutely love about our new place!

You guys, I have a garage parking spot! {!!!} I literally still get butterflies sometimes as I pull in and park… and then walk right to the building without having to go outside. If you don’t think this is a big deal, try going through winters in Chicago… parking on the street, in snow and muck, for the last 15 years. It’s fine and tons of people do it every day, but it makes having a garage parking spot feels like winning the parking lottery, for real. And attached garage parking is less common than you might think in Chicago, so I’m consciously enjoying every second of this luxury.

We have an elevator in our building. An ELEVATOR!!! I might appreciate this a bit more than I otherwise would after the super tall walk up we just moved out of, but you guys, when you really stop and think about it, elevators are a true miracle of the modern world. They are amazing, and I have one in my building! It’s awesome. I love having an elevator. I might even make up reasons to go back downstairs from time to time just to use it more often {kidding. but maybe not, lol}.

We have a garbage disposal. It’s legit the best. Seriously, I don’t actually know why I’m so excited about this but it’s pretty awesome if you think about it. Kitchen sinks can get gross. Cooking is messy… you get it. After only ever having one for a couple of years it feels super luxurious, even though you might not think of this as a luxury item. Let me tell you, if you haven’t had one, you don’t know what you’re missing. Look into it.

This is something I technically gave myself in our new place, but ohmygod new appliances are amazing. Everything cooks better, things don’t stick to the pan the way they used to, it’s culinary bliss. We didn’t even really splurge on anything super fancy here since this space is an investment and we’ll be selling pretty quickly, but seriously, I’m constantly marveling at how much better things cook on our new stove, and how awesome our new appliances are. I vow in this moment to never have old appliances again.

This last one is technically not in our place, but the best doughnut shop in the city is around the corner from my house. I both love and hate this. But I don’t hate it. Or maybe I’ll just hate doughnuts in a few months from eating them too much?! I’ll keep you posted on this one.

I know for certain that the more we transform our place as our renovation continues, the more excited I’ll get about other boring things, like when our kitchen counters come… when we build out our master bedroom closet… new bathroom tile and sinks… didn’t think someone could be excited over a new faucet?… well get ready for that moment!

The real reason I decided to share this list of silly ‘boring’ things that I’m elated about is that I really think everyone deserves to love their home… and really love it, the way I love my elevator and floors, lol.

Your home is your one place in the world that’s all yours,  the place where you rest, recharge, relax… it should feed your heart and spirit, and nourish you. So if you aren’t truly happy in your home take a little time to figure out what you don’t love and what isn’t working and change it. You deserve to really love where you live, the exciting parts and the boring middle aged things!
