Finding your style, so that you can bring it to life.

Before we moved I did a serious closet purge and got rid of most of my clothes. {honestly, I could still get rid of more} I would literally stand in front of the closet every morning and, feeling defeated and uninspired, I would literally say out loud with a sigh ~ I don’t know what to wear. Every day. Did I love anything in my closet? Do I even have a style? Probably not. It’s so easy in our closets and our houses to just amass a random collection of things over time that we often unintentionally end up living in…

An Ode to all the ‘Bad Girls’ and Rebels

Sunday was the 98th anniversary of women winning the right to vote. Can you believe that? It’s hard to imagine not being able to vote… the more I think about it it’s hard to imagine not being able to do many things that women haven’t always been allowed to do. Work Own property Have my own bank account Wear pants That’s just a tiny few. It can really be such a big deal for us to have more of anything, ever. Sometimes just doing what you love is a supremely rebellious act. {Susan B. Anthony, a primary leader in the…

Bye bye subway backsplash… a new trend is in town.

Subway tiles are classic, and ~ if done right ~ are timeless. But they’ve been so popular for enough years now that even these are starting to feel a little tired and overdone. I’ll always love them, but I will admit, there’s another approach to backsplashes that’s been a rare sighting for a long time, but is getting a little more attention these days, and I couldn’t be more excited. The slab as backsplash. Personally I’ve been head over heels in love with this look for a long time. It doesn’t really get more sophisticated than this. And if anything is more…

Where have all the medicine cabinets gone?!

As I pack up, and purge, and daydream about our ‘forever’ {for a reno at least} home… I randomly starting thinking about the strangest part of a house ~ medicine cabinets. Has anyone else noticed that medicine cabinets seem to be disappearing from bathrooms everywhere? what. the. heck?! Does it really even matter if there’s a medicine cabinet in the bathroom? Am I just getting stuck in old thinking about storage and being practical? I don’t have a medicine cabinet in my bathroom now, or any other {built-in} storage for that matter. And maybe that’s why this is weirdly on…

Logan Square Cottage gets a big facelift!

Yesterday was picture day at Carla and Andrew’s sweet Logan Square house, as we get ready to go on the market there soon. {if you want to see more about how they transformed the interior, click here} While they did a lot of work on the interior of their house, one of the simplest, but biggest impact, projects they did was replacing the siding on the exterior. The house looked okay with it’s original grey siding, but didn’t really stand out. And when you got closer than just looking at a photograph, you could tell that it had ‘been around…

Color is the New Neutral

I’m noticing a disturbing trend lately… I think it’s been going on for a while now and I just haven’t noticed, but an alarming number of homes are filled with absolutely horrible poo colored brown couches. Please. Stop this behavior immediately. Be better than a poo brown couch. I’m not really sure how anyone can look at that and think that it’s a good choice, forget trying to figure out why a furniture company would even offer it as an option. Ugh. Maybe poo brown is supposed to be neutral? Maybe not. The great news is that these days, in design…

Front Door Refresh Ideas ~ Wreaths, Door Knockers, and Door Mats Galore

I always love walking up to someone’s door and seeing a beautiful wreath, or a great door knocker. Doors and entryways don’t always get the love and attention that they deserve. They are people’s first physical interaction with your home, it’s a great chance to make a warm, welcoming first impression. There are a few simple elements to having a strong, statement making and memorable entrance. A solid door in a great color makes a strong foundation, and entry lights are the perfect frame. But the fun finishing touches are a great door knocker, and a fun door mat and…

{someone hates me} I’ve finally made it!

I think I experienced a significant milestone on the blog last week, my first hate comment. It was so exciting! What made it even more amazing was that it was a comment on my post about meditation. Seriously. Not super zen. In that very post that elicited such a strong response I talked about growing up a serious people-pleaser. For most of my life I sought validation from making other people happy, and I felt wrong and like I wasn’t enough if someone was unhappy with me, like I’d failed as a person somehow. I grew up and went into a creative profession,…

Maybe you’ve never thought about meditation… but maybe you should!

I don’t usually advertise events here, and I’d be perfectly happy keeping my meditation school my own little magical secret, but this place is pretty awesome, and so if you were ever thinking about maybe checking out a meditation class – this is the one to take. InVision is offering their signature Psychic Meditation Class for the last time this year starting this week. I started to write some of my own story to share what a profound impact it has had on my life. But then it got really long. So I’ll save that for some other, maybe a few other,…

The magic of a little, or a lot

I really listen to my intuition… all the time and for pretty much everything. Both for myself and when I’m working with clients on different projects. Having that kind of communication and knowingness is really magical and makes pretty much everything more validating and awesome. Nothing like being able to really tune into what’s right for you, or someone else, to create just the perfect thing in any given moment. Today I was getting frustrated because I couldn’t decide what I wanted to eat for dinner, and there’s nothing I like less these days than indecision or uncertainty. Never validating….
